RED ONE Build 18 (BETA) v3.6.0 Nov 12, 2008
SUMMARY:
Build 18 adds native 2x anamorphic recording at 4K 1 – 25 fps, 3K 1- 50 fps and 2K 1 – 100 fps with REDCODE 36 image quality to a RED 8 GB CF card. In addition, all monitor outputs including RED-EVF, RED-LCD, HDMI and HD-SDI, preview and playback recorded images in a final presentation equivalent 2.40:1 aspect ratio.
A companion version of RED-ALERT (v3.6.0) that scales and expands anamorphic .R3D footage is also available from the RED support web site.
The existing QuickTime codec will play camera generated QuickTime Reference Movies of anamorphic .R3D footage in the original 1.2:1 aspect ratio.
WARNING:
Read all instructions contained in the installation files before upgrading. Before upgrading to Build 18, you must have first upgraded to Build 17. Once the RED ONE is upgraded to Build 18, you will NOT be able to roll back to Build 15 or earlier builds.
Note: RED does not recommend using Build 18 on commercial jobs until formal release of the firmware at the conclusion of beta test cycles.
Note: After upgrading to Build 18, on-camera playback of media recorded by earlier builds may not be possible, nor can you add additional clips to digital media formatted under an earlier build. Ensure you reformat any digital media before shooting under Build 18.
Note: Make sure that you download the latest versions of the post production software (use V3.6.0 version of RED Alert post production software to process Build 18 footage 4K / 3K / 2K ANA footage) available at www.red.com/support before processing Build 18 footage.
Installation Instructions for RED ONE Build 18 v3.6.0 camera firmware:
- This upgrade is fully contained in the folder " build_18_v3.6.0 "
- In that folder is a copy of this Read Me file and the folder named " upgrade "
- The " upgrade " folder includes the camera firmware upgrade file " redone.su "
- DO NOT rename this folder, the camera only opens a folder named " upgrade "
- Do NOT decompress the " redone.su " file, the camera will perform that task.
- Format a CF card using Build 17
- Connect the CF card to your P.C or Macintosh via a CF card reader.
- Copy the folder called " upgrade " onto the CF card.
- Unmount the CF card from your computer (drag to the trash can)
- Ensure your camera is powered down.
- Insert the CF card into the CF card slot of your RED-ONE camera.
- Power up the camera.
- After booting up, the camera rear status display will report " New Firmware " and the RED-EVF or RED-LCD will report “A software update is available for your system”
- Press the joystick to confirm, and the rear status display will report " Upgrading "
- During the upgrade process, a blue progress bar will be visible on the RED-EVF or RED-LCD. This bar will continue for the duration of the upgrade, which is approximately five minutes.
- At the end of the upgrade process, the rear status display will report “O.K. Cycle Power” The RED-LCD or RED-LCD will report " Upgrade complete. Power cycle the camera to continue. "
- Power down the camera, wait five seconds, then power up the camera.
- Verify that the camera rear status display and or monitors report back: PIN (value specific to camera) Build 18 Version 3.6.0
- Installation is now complete.
Note: After the firmware upgrade, re-format the CF card prior to recording.
Note: After any camera firmware upgrade, performa a BLACK SHADING calibration.

Operational restrictions of Build 18 series firmware.
- S4/i Lens Data Interface requires corresponding Lens Interface hardware.
- Revised audio PPM metering requires corresponding Revision 2 audio board.
- Non-speed verified CF cards are limited to 2K record resolution.
- Non Build 18 formatted media may report as “INCOMPATIBLE”- if so, reformat to clear.
- Image Magnify is not available during recording or playback at 3K and 4K resolutions.
- Entering and exiting Image Magnify causes a visual disturbance to monitor outputs.
- Time Code / Edge Code values displayed in monitor outputs do not update in real-time.
- 1080p HD-SDI outputs do not support PsF signal formatting option.
- COLOR exposure meter display is inaccurate if VIEW is set to RAW.
- Limited GUI on HD Preview when both RED-EVF and RED-LCD are selected.
- EVF display with blank for approximately 3 seconds when in SYNC refresh mode:
- when exiting OPEN GATE mode
- after a change in Project Resolution

- If using a 16GB CF card, the upgrade file is not erased at the end of the upgrade process.
Therefore reformatted any 16GB CF cards used for camera firmware upgrades before recording.
- On power up, monitors may display Blue channel only – if so power cycle.
- LCD tearing may sometimes be visible in lower 10% of screen with 4K footage.
- Genlock (Tri-Level Sync) for 50.00 fps has not yet been verified.
- Non Build 16 formatted media will report “DISK INCOMPATIBLE”- reformat to clear.
- Image Magnify is not available during recording at 4K resolutions.
- Edge Code not available from LEMO 5 timecode connector.
- Audio and Timecode are not embedded on HD-SDI outputs.
